AIL MATCH REPORT

Galwegians 11 Clontarf 33

By Mark Byrnes

Clontarf continued their early season form with a fine win over Galwegians at Crowley Park on Saturday.

The home side started brightly and with a strong wind their backs took the lead with a penalty from full back John Cleary.   Clontarf went in front with a try from Barry O’Mahony after a terrific maul from a lineout.

Just before the interval, a superb break from the impressive O’Mahony made great yards and unselfishly off loaded to scrum half Sam Cronin to touch down under the posts. Noel Reid converted to give Tarf a 12-3 lead.

The game was over as a contest just a minute after the restart, Ben Gissing made a great barnstorming run in the Galwegians 22 and was held up just yards from the line, the ball was quickly recycled and prop Ciaran Kavanagh crashed over the line, with Noel Reid converting after the referee overruled his touch judges.

Galwegians cut the lead to 13 points after another penalty from Cleary, but Clontarf stretched the lead further on the hour when Killian Lett burst through some weak defence to score under the posts to secure a deserved bonus point.

Young Mick McGrath showed his skill and pace when he danced around the Galwegians defence to put a gloss on a great display from the winger. Reid converted once again.

The home side did manage a consolation try with three minutes to go, but the day belonged to Clontarf and they finished 33-11 winners to send the large traveling support home in good form.

Clontarf now face Buccaneers on 23rd October at Castle Avenue in a top of the table clash.
