Seapoint 9 Clontarf 34
Fixtures like these, particularly at the start of the season , where goliaths are pitched against davids are renowned for throwing up crazy results. The fact that Clontarf prevailed by 6 tries to none does little justice to Seapoint’s first half defensive effort.
Playing in their opening fixture of the season they tackled like men possessed, often knocking themselves senseless in the process. At half time they were behind by a point conceding two tries to three penalties.
Inevitably in the second half the defensive exertions took their toll and Clontarf turned forward superiority into a rout in the final quarter adding four tries to their first half brace for six at the finish and a bonus point. It required some positional juggling in the second half before ‘Tarf stopped running up blind alleys, with Van Zyl moving to out half and Hewitt moving to full back with Leinster junior scrum half Campbell easing in for his senior debut. This provided the width and allied to quicker transfer of ball the ‘Tarf backs began to outflank their opponents at will.
So ‘Tarf are back on track with 6 points in their group and sit in second place behind Trinity who disposed of Barnhall in the other group ‘C’ fixture.
