J1's FALTER AT TEMPLEVILLE ROAD Author: Dave O 'Siochain 2005-11-24 The J1's fell to their first defeat of the campaign at the weekend in a hard fought battle with St Marys at Templeville Road. After recording consecutive victories against Suttonians, Bective, Old Wesley, DLSP, Terenure, Old Belvedere and Wanderers, they lost by two points in a contest which saw the lead change hands several times. St. Marys got off to a flying start scoring two break away tries from quick tap penalties and found themselves 14 nil up within the first ten minutes. But the Tarf side rallied and forced a penalty infront of the posts after some concerted pressure on the Mary's defence. The penalty was missed but from the ensuing restart Tarf created several phases of play which resulted in Paul Mullen powering over for a try which Paul Ryan converted. Marys' quickly reasserted their dominance and added to their lead with a penalty. But again Tarf used their front five dominance to maul the ball deep into the opposition half, the ball was spun wide and Paul Ryan touched down in the corner and later added the extra two points. Just before half time Ryan added a penalty to square the tie. Marys regained the lead 20mins into the second half, taking advantage of their numerical advantage following the unfair sinbinning of Andy Wood (a case of mistaken identity). The J1's defended valiantly repelling the confident attacking of the St. Marys side. Upon returning from his ten minute sabbatical, the inspired Andy Wood scored a try to bring Tarf within two points of the home side. Unfortunately, Ryan hit the post with the conversion and the game ended in a two point loss for the Northsiders. | ||||
