On a day more like an end of season sunfest Clontarf kicked off their new season by overcoming Trinity’s stubborn defiance by five tries to two.
‘Tarf jumped out of the blocks to a 5 nil lead after winger Derek Keane powered over in the corner. He was to repeat that particular feat twice for a hat trick before the game was over.
In between was a fractious affair punctuated by defensive lapses by the home side which allowed Trinity in for two tries ably converted by their no 10 Johnny Watt.
After a raft of retirements and departures in the close season Clontarf are fielding almost a brand new side so an opening win was extremely heartening . So also was the fact that the backs scored all the tries with the three from Keane being added to by right wing Rantz McDonald and O’Brien in the centre. Special mention also to Peter O’Brien at full back who kicked 9 points. He is following in the illustrious footsteps of his brother Dave who is a past captain of Clontarf.
