Garryowen 18 Clontarf 16
On a windy, wet Limerick afternoon Clontarf had their first stumble of the 2003/2004 season going down to a young but committed Garryowen outfit who were keen to build on their opening drawn game v St Mary’s the previous week. Its early days but already the sense of rebuilding is obvious in the Clontarf game. Last year with a team of monsters ‘Tarf were able to squander chances safe in the knowledge that at the next possession they would probably score. On Saturday the mistakes started early and continued until the final play of the game where a 4 to 1 overlap was spurned due to a knock on within yards of the line.
Having been voted team of the year in 2003 Clontarf are everyones main target this year. Beating the Northside team will be a major booster for all the AIL sides. This is a deserved compliment that we could do without but must recognise and plan for.
This squad is more talented man for man than its equivalent 2 years ago. We will sharpen up and become more ruthlessly efficient as the season goes on, so lets all hope we begin next Saturday.
