Founded in 1876, Clontarf is one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in Ireland. Having played firstly in a field at the bottom of Vernon Avenue, then on a site currently used by Dublin Bus as a Depot., the Club moved to its present location and celebrated 100 years at Castle Avenue in 1976.

The Bull Emblem used in the logo is that of the district - Cluan Tairbh, translates, The Field of the Bull. The Red and Blue colours are used by most sporting clubs in the Parish.

The Club has been moderately successful in the number of trophies won - a total of 21 Leinster Branch Pennants hang in the Pavilion - of these 4 were won by the 1st XV, the latest being the Leinster Senior Cup in 1999.

Thousands of players have enjoyed playing Rugby at Castle Avenue over the years, in all 9 players have won a total of 59 Irish Caps - the last being Johnny Fortune in 1963. The President's and Captain's Boards displayed in the Clubhouse contain the names of many of the people who have served the club long and well over the years

At least seven adult teams are fielded at weekends, each with their own manager and coach, who, together with the team captain are responsible for selection, with the assistance of Senior Selectors for the first three teams and with Junior Selectors for the remaining teams. Our under 19's are separately managed and selected.

The Club has a thriving Youth Section catering for children from 7 years of age upwards. They are coached and supervised on Friday nights and Sunday mornings by a very willing and dedicated team of Coaches.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd team training is usually on Tuesday and Thursday at 7.00 p.m. While junior sides train on Monday and Wednesday also at 7.00 p.m.
