Clontarf Rugby Club has had great success this season in underage rugby with the Youth teams bringing in no less than three Leinster League Titles and two Cups. With over 475 players now participating from 6 years of age to 18 years of age, the mini & youth section of the club is vibrant.

In December of this season the U13s were first to bring in a League Title. They went unbeaten in the Leinster Schools/Youth League and secured the title before Christmas. Meanwhile the U17s topped Section A of the Leinster Schools/Youth league table to earn a home draw in the League Semi-Final. In January a close fought semi-final saw Skerries leading 13-14 in Castle Avenue with only minutes remaining. Clontarf scored a late try to win the game 18-14. Two weeks later the U17s dispatched Seapoint with clinical efficiency in the final – winning 23-0.

The U13s began to progress steadily in both the Metro League and the Schools Youth Cup. Meanwhile Clontarf U17s progressed to the final of their Schools/Youth Cup. During mid March a new U16s squad assembled and qualified through a blitz competition for the finals of the Sean Stratton Cup.

On Monday 23rd April the U13s won their Metro League having gone unbeaten in that competition. Three nights later the U17s were narrow losers to Old Belvedere in the U17s Schools/Youth Cup loosing 9-6. On Saturday 28th April the U16s assembled in DLSP to play their quarter final in the Sean Stratton Cup blitz competition. Old Wesley, Galway Corinthians and Mullingar were duly dispatched by a strong Clontarf U16s and they lifted the Cup shortly after 1.30pm.

Finally the fifth title was secured by the U13s on Sunday the 29th April. Despite facing a very strong Terenure side they ran out winners on the day 24-0. That final fixture saw the U13s go all season without loosing a game.

A great season all round for youth rugby and a good sign for the future.

Clontarf and Leinster referee, Brian MacNeice, will step into the ring on Friday 11th May in aid of the Help Sergio Fund. Sergio O’Connor is a very brave one year old twin boy that is suffering from a rare condition which prevents him from eating, drinking or swallowing. For more information about little Sergio and his appeal fund visit http://www.helpsergio.com/

Irish Olympian and boxing legend, Michael Carruth is currently putting Brian through his paces in preparation for fight night. However, to get him into the ring he has to raise sufficient sponsorship funds to make it worthwhile. This is where you come in. You have the double incentive of helping to raise money for the inspirational Sergio whilst at the same time condemning a referee to a beating. How can you resist?

If you wish to sponsor Brian and ensure that he has to fight on May 11th then please send an email with your donation amount to brian.macneice@kotinospartners.com or by text on 087 2422290. He will make an arrangement to collect the donated sum in advance of fight night.

The Sean Stratton Cup Final was held on Saturday 28th April in Kirwan Park, the home of De la Salle Palmerston. 21 teams participated over three weekends from Ulster, Leinster and Connaught in a blitz format competition.

Clontarf U16s had not played together in the club since two seasons ago (U14s) when they were runners up in the Leinster Schools Youth League. A few new faces together with most of the old ones assembled as a virtual ‘scratch team’ for this tournament. The first weekend involved 4 games back to back for ‘Tarf U16s and the final weekend included a quarter final, semi-final and final. Clontarf saw off challenges from St. Marys, Corinthians, Skerries, Mullingar, Old Wesley and North Kildare over the two weekends to lift the cup on Saturday afternoon.

Graham Cooke of DLSP and his team put in a huge effort to arrange the tournament and did an outstanding job. The tournament was designed to bring Schools Junior Cup players back to their clubs with a view to playing in U17s competitions next season. Our sincere thanks go out to Graham and all those involved in planning the tournament.

Sean Stratton is the ‘father’ of Mini/Youth Rugby in Leinster having been instrumental in its development during the 1960s. It is fitting that this competition contributes to club rugby by relaxing Leinster Rules to allow JCT players participate. As many JCT players enter transition year they will rejoin their club mates and take up where they left of in mini rugby.

The Under 13s lifted their second trophy of the season when beating Malahide in Castle Avenue on Monday evening with a fine display of attacking rugby. Their season is divided into three competitions – two in league format, and the third a knock-out cup competition.- so with the two leagues secured they will take on Terenure in the cup final this Sunday 29th April (Blackrock, 1pm ko).

Throughout the season they have played a good brand of rugby, the aim of which is for everyone to handle and run with the ball. Captain Donal Ryan has been tremendously consistent all the way through, as has vice captain Frankie O’Dea. This has already been the most successful season at under 13s for lots of reasons: while the silverware is great, the numbers registered at this level are over 70, with players spread over three squads. Attendance all the way through has been very strong and as well as a dedicated group of coaches we have a great group of parents who have supported all three squads through thick and thin since September. We hope to see everyone back again in September.

Club President John Glackin presented the cup to the players (Pictured above) on the steps of the clubhouse. He gave a short and passionate speech to the players. He informed them that the last U13 team to enjoy similar success provided last Saturday’s Senior XV with no less than eight players.

There is a debate bubbling in the IRFU corridors of power around the subject of money in the Irish club game. The debate was kicked off by a small number of clubs who have found themselves on the wrong end of the debt cycle as the property market collapsed and as their local bank manager morphed from happy smiley golf club handshake man into something from the cast of the film “Pulp Fiction”. Needless to say this has gathered legs in true Irish political style and the said clubs have managed to disguise blatant self interest as a “common good” issue, and have generated traction in an IRFU liberally populated with “concerned” tut tutters and sparsely populated with clear thinkers and even less with transparent, direct, communicators.

For the clubs on the other side of the accounts ledger; those who are solvent, raise money before they spend it, and manage their debts with scrooge like intensity Saturdays contest in Castle Avenue was their answer to the debate. Two Clubs from vastly different traditions, from different sides of the City, clashed in a game that , had it been attended by any neutral party in this wasteful discussion would surely have ended the debate flat. Dead as a doornail!

If this is an example of a Club game in crisis then we have all been wasting our time for the last fifteen years. In front of a crowd of c. 2000 spectators Clontarf and St. Mary’s delivered a contest straight from the pages of the Norse Sagas and in an 80 minute battle ended the argument about the viability of the Irish Club game. If this was an example of wasteful Clubs spending foolish money on uncommitted , greedy players then they need to watch the playback and count how many times the Mary’s captain Hugh Hogan threw himself head first into rucks ; they would have liked to have been in the Clontarf medical room after the match to see Killian Lett almost fainting with pain and exhaustion after a titanic contribution to a lost cause; they could have seen the Clontarf tight head and try scorer Niall Treston at the end of the game crushed with emotion after an effort that was unsuccessful on the scoreboard but glorious in its corinthian intensity.

The game can be summed up as the Clontarf bludgeon versus the St. Mary’s rapier. Clontarf dominated possession and territory but failed due to the tenacity and commitment of the St. Mary’s defence where, as mentioned, Hugh Hogan was immense and was closely followed by hooker Richie “Chips” Sweeney. Clontarf will rue the 10 minute period starting just before half time when three home errors gifted tries to the sparkling Mary’s wingers and on a day where place kicking was a lottery that was to prove too high a mountain to climb for the home side. But by God did they give it a shot ! The last 20 minutes were spent effectively camped on the Mary’s line where the men in blue repulsed wave after wave of attack. At one point the crowd noise became a blur of screams as the tension from both sets of supporters gave voice. In the end Mary’s held on and deservedly go in to the last round of games with the momentum. Clontarf will require a performance against Lansdowne on the Main Aviva pitch next Saturday and will be hoping that Young Munster bring their special brand of defiance to Templeville at the same time.

For me this special day was summed up by the sight of a little girl , no more than 5 or 6 , her face, apache painted, in blue stripes lounging underneath the Mary’s bench as the game and the excitement went off around her. It was that kind of day . Great for families and local supporters, and great for the two Clubs.

Captain Hugh Hogan turned in a man-of-the-match performance to inspire St. Mary’s College to a narrow win over Clontarf at Castle Avenue, with the result putting them in pole position to become Ulster Bank League champions.

Darren Hudson’s second half brace of tries and a terrific defensive display, particularly after they had Mark Sextonsin-binned late on, ensured the victory for St. Mary’s who hold a two-point lead heading into the final round of matches.Peter Smyth’s men now know that a win at home to Young Munster next Saturday will secure the club’s first top flight title since 2000.

Clontarf were left to rue their failure to turn possession into points at Castle Avenue, but they are still in the hunt to lift the trophy hoping that they can beat Lansdowne in the final round and that St. Mary’s slip up against Munsters.

Gavin Dunne’s 19th-minute penalty nudged St. Mary’s ahead this afternoon, but Clontarf hit back with an inspirational individual try from Killian Lett.

He exposed some poor defending to cross in the 23rd minute and the successful conversion from Richie Lane opened up a four-point lead.

However, St. Mary’s enjoyed a crucial purple patch on the stroke of half-time, with Conor Hogan’s clever chip and chase effort earning him a try in the left corner.

Armed with an 8-7 interval lead, the visitors motored on with two tries in a five-minute spell from the dangerous Hudson.

The Leinster prospect thrilled his club’s supporters with two cracking finishes in the right corner, the second coming from Damian Hall’s delightful short pass.

Clontarf responded with a Niall Treston five-pointer from a close range drive, closing the gap to 18-12 and setting up an exciting final 20 minutes.

But Andy Wood’s home side were unable to breach the St. Mary’s defence again as Hugh Hogan and his team-mates dug deep to hold onto their lead and put themselves within 80 minutes of league glory.

Early charges from Mick McGrath and Aaron Dundon set the tone for a fired-up Clontarf side, but Lane missed a difficult opening penalty in the third minute.

The stiff wind certainly had an influence on proceedings as did some sterling defence from the St. Mary’s forwards, led by fit-again captain Hogan and Rob Sweeney.

‘Tarf dominated possession in the first quarter but the visitors closed down the space time and again, making for precious few scoring opportunities.

St. Mary’s countered in terrific fashion as their skipper Hogan dummied his way over halfway and linked with the supporting Conor Hogan, however a fumble at the breakdown led to a turnover.

Yet Smyth’s well-drilled outfit maintained their presence in the ‘Tarf half and forced a central penalty which full-back Dunne converted for the opening points.

Half-breaks from Timmy McCoy and the industrious Ben Reilly got ‘Tarf quickly firing again though.

They stormed into the St. Mary’s 22 before Noel Reid’s long pass found Lett, who shrugged off Hudson’s initial challenge and used his considerable strength to muscle over from eight metres out.

Lane judged the wind expertly to add the conversion and he was narrowly wide, five minutes before the break, with a tricky left-sided penalty.

St. Mary’s ended the first half on the offensive with Stephen Grissing showing well on a midfield run, and Hudson applying good pressure when chasing his own kick.

Clontarf paid the price for Reid failing to find touch late on. St. Mary’s countered near halfway and Dunne’s lovely looping pass unleashed Hogan on the left – he dinked a kick over the covering Reid, won the race to the bouncing ball and crashed over for a brilliant solo try.

Dunne was off target with the conversion attempt, but St. Mary’s had an extra pep in their step now and it showed when the second half got underway.

After the wind pushed an early Dunne penalty wide, set up by Gareth Austin’s hard work at the breakdown, Smyth’s charges struck for their second try to go 13-7 in front.

Hudson sent up a loose kick, but Reilly failed to gather the high ball and the winger regained possession to sprint through, step away from Lane and hand off Sam Cronin on the way to the line.

Dunne’s conversion kick went to the right and wide and he also failed to convert Hudson’s 50th-minute try, which saw him touch down under pressure from Lane and Cronin again.

‘Tarf upped their collective efforts on the restart with Frank Cogan barrelling through midfield. Five minutes later, big prop Treston lunged over for his try after a concerted spell of pressure near the visitors’ whitewash.

Although the conversion was drilled wide by Lane, the north Dubliners clearly had the bit between their teeth and their forwards were beginning to dictate.

Some committed, disciplined defence from Philip Brophy and Ciaran Ruddock won a relieving penalty for St. Mary’s, as they protected their hard-earned advantage with just over ten minutes left.

Despite plenty of endeavour from ‘Tarf, they lacked the cutting edge to break through St. Mary’s spirited defence. The visitors drew confidence from a Stephen Bradshaw lineout steal and a Hogan turnover on the deck.

Amid a late barrage from ‘Tarf, St. Mary’s lost replacement Sexton to a yellow card for killing the ball close to his posts. The 14 men battled on and deservedly triumphed at the end of a hugely entertaining encounter.
